Wendy Root Askew Bio

     Wendy Root Askew is a mother to a young child, wife to an architect, daughter to a parent educator and retired Army Colonel. A creative problem-solver with four generations of deep roots in Monterey County. Askew is committed to advancing policy that promotes the ability of families – in all their forms. She is committed to supporting all Monterey County residents have their basic needs met in safe, connected communities where there is opportunity for personal fulfillment, and access to protected natural resources.  


     Representing the communities of Sand City, Del Rey Oaks, Marina, East Garrison, CSUMB, Salinas, and Seaside, Askew was sworn in as Supervisor, and Chair, of the Monterey County Board of Supervisors on January 5, 2021. Askew serves on the Board’s Budget, Legislative, Human Resource, and Alternative Energy & Environment committees. In 2021, she was also appointed the Board of Supervisor Ad Hoc Committees addressing COVID Communications and Housing Authority of Monterey County Reorganization. Additionally, Askew represents the Board of Supervisors on the Monterey Regional Waste Management District Board, Monterey Bay Air Resources District Board, Transportation Agency for Monterey County Board, Remote Access Network Board, and Monterey County Children’s Council. 


     Prior to her election as Supervisor, Askew served one term on the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District Board of Education where she has supported an expanded Transitional Kindergarten program, over $300 million in facility improvements, increased pay for teachers, and expanded mental health services into every single school.  


     A founding member of the Monterey Peninsula Housing Coalition, Askew is leading efforts to increase access to affordable housing on the Monterey Peninsula. She is also a champion of Bright Beginnings Monterey County since leading its inception as the Monterey County Early Childhood Development Initiative. Additionally, she is a former Board member of Improving Birth fighting for informed consent and evidence based maternity care. Her work in support of early childhood development and parent education goes back to 2001 as a founder of the Parenting Connection of Monterey County.
