Coastal Construction Information

Marina–Sand City Coastal Trail Construction Update

We know how important the bike and recreation trail between Marina and Sand City is to our residents and visitors. Two overlapping projects are currently impacting access along the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail — one led by Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) and another by California State Parks.

Monterey-Salinas Transit — SURF! Busway & Rapid Transit Project

  • Construction began April 2025 and continues through Spring 2028
  • Temporary trail closures between Reindollar Ave. and Palm Ave.
  • Purpose: Improve transit efficiency, safety, and coastal corridor access.

California State Parks — Fort Ord Dunes Trail Realignment & Campground Project

  • Construction began Summer 2025 and is expected to last about two years
  • Portions of the trail are being detoured to a parallel route outside the park
  • Project supports coastal access, habitat restoration, and expanded recreation.

Safety First

Please respect posted signs, detour markings, and closures. Avoiding the area protects everyone — including the crews working to improve the trail. Violations of posted “Do Not Enter” signage may result in citations.

Why This Matters

This work is a temporary disruption with lasting benefit — safer travel, stronger connections, and better access for cyclists, families, and visitors across the Monterey Bay. Thank you for your patience, stewardship, and partnership in protecting this coastal treasure.

December 8, 2025 Virtual Community Meeting

On December 8, 2025 Supervisor Wendy Root Askew and Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado hosted a Virtual Community Meeting with representatives from Monterey-Salinas Transit and CA State Parks to provide the public with information on two constructions projects impacting pedestrian access to the coast between Marina and Sand City. About 75 community members joined the meeting to learn about the projects and share how it is impacting their commutes and recreational activities.
